Time for Celebration!

Today I am celebrating finding an amazing service three years ago and I want to give you a gift. Be sure and read to the very end to find out what my gift to you is.

Three years ago I was searching on the internet for information on The Laws of Attraction. I was clicking on various websites and I happened on a forum about LOA. I read the posts and noticed a signature link about greeting cards. I have always been a card sender so it intrigued me. I clicked on the link and filled out the form to request to send a free card. I thought that if the service really did what it said it did, I would be one of their best customers. A little while later I received a phone call giving me the link to the website to send my greeting card. I tried it and was immediately hooked. It DID do everything described and More! I knew I had to have this amazing system. I wouldn't have to go to the card store again. I could truly customize and personalize my cards. It would remind me when to send the cards. I could type my message in the cards and it would come out in my handwriting. I could add photos to the cards. It was to good to be true. I wanted it. For the next three days I did my due diligence and searched the web for what else was out there that was comparable. (I was really searching for a better price. I wanted all the bells and whistles, but I'm also a frugal person so I wanted to know if there was anything else available.) I found some other services, but none offered all the features and they all cost more. So after three days of thought, research, and asking questions I signed up for the Entrepreneur account. My plan was to use it for business as well as personal use, because I was buying about 15 to 30 greeting cards a month. With this service the cards costs a whole lot less than the store brand cards and I didn't have to go to the store or the post office. That saved me time and and lots of money. I could also schedule cards to be mailed ahead of time.

It gets even better. You know how when you find something that's really great you want to tell all your friends about it. Well, I started showing this to a few friends and business acquaintances and they wanted to sign up too. Hmmmm.....I thought this is to easy. It got me to thinking and looking at the advantages offed by this company. The benefits were very appealing. I decided to change my business focus and re-vamped my product offers and marketing and never looked back. To date I have sent over 4050 cards.

This is truly a home based business that anyone who believes in gratitude and showing appreciation can do.

You only need a phone, a computer, and the desire to show and tell people about this amazing product.

No home parties
No opportunity meetings
No inventory
A company with a 5 year track record and growing
Unique product
It's Easy and convenient to use
No high monthly volume required
Product that compliments every business
Product for individual use
Widely used product for both men and woman (in fact the top people in the company are men)
It's International
Minimal start up costs
Competitively priced for consumer
Balance of right now money and residual money
And best of all - It's FUN!

So, what is the gift I'm offering to you?

Chocolate! - I want to give away as many Greeting Card Gift accounts today (and until the end of the month) as possible, so for every person who goes to my website - www.remembergreetingcards.com/paintedlady - fills out the form (and be sure and tell me where you heard about this offer.) I will send you a link to send a free greeting card. When you send one greeting card, Your name will then be placed in a drawing to receive Chocolate Brownies - Yum! So if you have never taken advantage of sending a free card from me, do so now and you just might win Chocolate Brownies. I will draw at the end of July, notify the winner, and post the winner here.

Receive extra chances to win by telling your friends about this offer. Just send me the names of those who you send this offer to and when they send their free card, you will receive another chance to receive Free Brownies. Or tell them to list your name on the form to request their free greeting card.

Thank you for your time and your business. Have a Fabulous Friday!

In gratitude,
Annette - Happy Card Sender!

Twitter on Steroids

Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBase

I attended a Social Media class today. It was great to learn all about the neat tools that helps to automate social media, Twitter in particular. It helped to have someone to explain all the different tools and how that would enhance your Twittering. This is not to take away from the personal touch of online networking, but it is the extender of Twitter. The advantage of using these tools is that it saves time. It's like having a personal assistant helping you. Being a busy person, like most everyone else, I just don't have the time to be on the computer all day long. Like any other tools, they help make work easier. I believe these are going to help me tremendously.

Here is a list of some of the Twitter Tools to check out:

- TwitBack - To Personalize and Brand your Twitter back ground.
- HootSuite - Integrates Twitter accounts
- HootLet - Shortens URLs
- TweetLater - Productivity Tools
- TwitterFeed - RSS feed from Blog to Twitter
- BubbleTweet - Video
- TweetGrid - Search Tweets for specific topics
- Monitter - Customize search by geography
- Zemanta - Tool to assist in blog writing

Wow, I'm amazed at all of these wonderful tools. I look forward to using them. Do you have some that you use and find useful? Would love to hear about them.

Thanks to MultiTasking Moms for hosting the event. Thanks Bill Reichart for the wonderful instruction. Thanks Blonde Affliate for your wonderful support and encouragement.

In gratitude,

Lessons Learned on Branding from Celebrities

For the past week all we've heard on the news has been about Michael Jackson. The following is from my favorite 'marketing guru,' Liz Goodgold. She tells us about lessons we can learn from celebrities in regards to branding.

What You Can Learn from Michael Jackson

Given the unexpected death of Michael Jackson, it’s only fitting to take a moment to see him as both an icon and a brand.

Michael’s success speaks for itself: best-selling record of all time (Thriller), amazing videos boosting MTV’s image (Billie Jean, Dangerous), and chart toppers (The Girl is Mine, Bad, P.Y.T., Black or White). He earned his place as a brand for many reasons, but let’s take a look at a few of them:

He had a Nickname:
All of the greats have one; he took The King of Pop.

Here are others:

Descriptive Name / Performance Name

First Lady of Soul - Aretha Franklin
King of Soul - James Browne
The Boss - Bruce Springsteen
The Queen of Country Music - Kitty Wells
Chairman of the Board - Frank Sinatra
Rhinestone Cowboy - Glenn Campbell

What’s the Hot Lesson? Nicknames are tremendously powerful. You only come up with them if you care about a brand. If you’re indifferent, you won’t waste a moment creating one. Most importantly, however, nicknames are a sign of endearment: You are so special that you deserve a special name.

If you’re still struggling with a catchy name, think back into your childhood. Ask your parents, siblings, and childhood playmates if there are any nicknames or pet names they remember using for you.

He Had a Strong Visual Brand - Whether it was the flood pants with socks showing, the hat, or the white glove, there was a distinctive Michael Jackson look. Oh, and let’s not forget the famous moonwalk!

Here is the key:

People become celebrity brands when they can be imitated.

If you’ve ever tried to change your accent, play down a personality trait, or banish a word from your vocabulary, stop! You too can start building a strong brand by embracing all of your quirks, mannerisms, and style.

by Liz Goodgold, branding expert, author, and speaker. Sign up for her FREE BRAND FINALE newsletter with valuable information at www.redfirebranding.com.”

How have you branded yourself or your business? What businesses can you think of that have outstanding branding?

Mine, of course, is Painted Lady. Often I meet people that don't know me by my given name, but they do know me as The Painted Lady. I'm flattered because I know my branding works. If you're wondering where the name comes from; it's from my love of butterflies. There is a species of butterfly called The Painted Lady.

I was recently denied 'PaintedLady' as a user name on Wikipedia as they thought it was inappropriate. Guess they don't know anything about butterflies.

What's Your Back Up Plan?

Recently I've seen several articles like this one talking about how the ranks of direct sales companies are increasing due to the economy. And I have also observed many people signing up for these opportunities to make some extra cash. I have been a part of direct sales industry myself for over 27 years. I signed up the first time in 1969 to make some extra money to buy an area rug for my living room and to send my children to kindergarten. It was hard work, but I reaped the benefits and I was very successful. I was able to be with my children, take them to their after school activities, etc. I won trips, jewelry, furs, silver, and bought four new cars, among other things for my family. I did the home parties, placed the orders, put together the orders, delivered the orders, etc. It was hard work, but I loved the benefits especially the trips. Even walked away with a substantial amount of money which we used for a down payment on a larger home with a pool. Things changed (life happened) and I decided to pursue something else, the corporate job.

I did the corporate thing. Went to work for a company that boasted they never laid anyone off. Well in the mid-90s that changed. This got me to thinking. I needed a back up plan. I had been successful in direct sales before, I could do it again. I decided on the company and after the second call to the representative, she agreed to come out and talk with me and my husband. I ordered my inventory, a lot of it, and started my part-time business. Eight years later my company (the corporate job), after being bought out for the second time, offered me early retirement. I took it with the plan of working on my part-time business full time. Back to the home parties, placing orders, delivering orders, stocking inventory, etc., etc. I didn't have quite the same success as the first time, but I did advance in the ranks, won a couple of trips, jewelry, and other awards.

Which brings me to the present. Along the way with the above company I discovered another service that I signed up for that I could use to help make my life easier to send invitations, thank you cards, birthday cards, etc. which was an on-line greeting card service. My intention was to use the service for my current business. Well like anything else, I started telling my friends and family about it and they decided to start using it. After signing up a few people and receiving my commission, I looked more closely at the compensation plan. Didn't take me long to make some changes in my focus. No home parties, no inventory, no deliveries, a service everyone needs and uses, both men and women, it's international, costs less than you can buy the product at the store, it's fun and easy, all I needed was a phone and a computer and people to talk to. These are just some of the reasons why I'm excited about the service I offer today! Even my daughter told me, 'Mom this just suits you better.' I totally agree.

Why am I writing this you ask? The article that I referenced in the beginning could just as well be written about the greeting card business, it's just that the companies mentioned have been around longer. Here is my advice to anyone considering the direct sales, network marketing, MLM business, etc.:

- Find a product/service you love first and foremost
- Something you will use - at least if you love it and use it, you will receive the benefit of a discount for yourself
- Consider the price of the product/service. Can a comparable product/service be purchased elsewhere at a lower price?
- Something you will feel proud to present to your family and friends
- Consider your target audience - Who will you sell your product/service to
- How will you sell your products - Are you required to hold home parties? Stock inventory? Think about the time and expense of travel and the inventory for demonstration products.
- Costs to get started and what is included in the price
- Consider subsequent administrative and other costs - monthly charges for websites, marketing material, yearly fees, training, etc.
- Basic requirements to remain active
- Ongoing support from your sponsor - someone who is going to be there when you need them
- Any meeting attendance requirements
- Training - How much training is required before getting started
- How long will it take to re-coup your investment?
- Understand the compensation plan and how you will receive payment - in products, credits, money, and at what intervals
- Consider the integrity of the company - how long in business, management, debt, growth, testimonials of other representatives.

Having been in the industry, I will say there are some good and not so good companies out there, just do your 'due diligence' before signing up. Don't be blinded by the glamour and the hype of making tons of money overnight. I will be the first to tell you that yes you can make money, earn awards, trips, etc., however it takes time, work, and persistence. For the majority, it doesn't just happen (overnight). But when it does happen there's no greater feeling of accomplishment and success.

Yes, I love where I am now and love offering this wonderful service to others.

If you would like to know more about what I'm excited about, Click Here.

I would also love to hear your comments regarding your experience with direct sales, network marketing, MLM, etc.

To Your Success!

R.S.V.P.....Regrets Only??!!

The term R.S.V.P comes from the French expression "répondez s'il vous plaît", meaning "please respond". If RSVP is written on an invitation it means the invited guest must tell the host or hostess whether or not they plan to attend the party or event. It does not mean to respond only if you're coming, and it does not mean respond only if you're not coming (the term "regrets only" is reserved for that instance). It means the host/hostess needs a definite head count for the planned event, and needs it by the date specified on the invitation. Or if a date is not specified, then the invitee needs to respond with a yes or no answer ASAP. Exert from About.com: Entertaining

I think most people think that RSVP means, 'I'm suppose to let you know if I plan to attend.' That would be nice, especially if there is a date stating to please respond by such and such a date.

Have you ever planned or hosted an event, party, dinner, etc.? Is it me or are people just oblivious to the terms, R.S.V.P, Regrets Only, or even more directive, 'Please let me know you are coming OR NOT.'

I started musings about this a few weeks ago and wrote out my thoughts and said OK, let me come back to this later. The next evening I showed up at a networking event and got busted because guess who had not responded!? You guessed it, Me! I swear I thought I did. So I guess the moral of the story, (as the old saying goes), 'don't point the finger at anyone, because you have three pointing back at you.'

In today's busy busy world, we forget, we procrastinate, we get busy, etc. I think we all have good intentions. We need to put ourselves in the person's shoes who is hosting the event. Think about the last time you hosted an event. Let them know yes, no, or maybe, and follow up as soon as you know the maybe turns into a yes or no. And try not to wait until the last minute unless it is just unavoidable. The hostess has to plan. If food is involved, they have to plan for the number of guests, prepare the food, etc., not to mention every thing else that's involved.

Get yourself organized. Plan ahead. Does living in a 'spur of the moment,' 'flying by the seat of your pants,' 'Let's see if the stars and the moon align just right I might go' work for you? This is not being very respective or courteous to the hostess. And I love it when someone says, Well you know I'll probably be there.' No folks, the hostess doesn't know. She is probably like me, she failed 'Crystal Ball 101' and 'Basic Mind Reading.'

One more thing.....If you need directions or want to ask a question, call a day or two ahead of time. Don't wait until you're walking out the door. Another one of my other pet peeve, waiting until the day of the event and especially a few hours before hand to call and ask for directions (which were included in the invitation), ask if they can bring anything, or to call to say why they can't come and keep you the phone for an hour. For several years we hosted a huge summer party and I always put my significant other's cell phone number on the invitation as the number to call the day of the event. When you're trying to get ready for 50 to 100 people to show up, you just have got some stuff to do and you just don't have time to shoot the sX%!)... I'm mean breeze.

So the next time you receive an invitation and it says R.S.V.P., put yourself in that host/hostesses situation and give them a courtesy answer, even if you may not know until closer to the date. They need some sort of idea of a headcount for planning purposes.

I would love to hear any of your ideas on ensuring your guests reply to your invitations and R.S.V.P.

May your next event or party be a smashing success.

In gratitude,
Annette

Time to Sell Value, Not Price

The article below is by my very favorite marketing expert, Liz Goodgold. She brings home a very good point about Price vs. Value. Which do you offer your clients?

Everyone in this economy keeps shouting “sale!” or “lowest prices guaranteed.” But, I think they should be talking about value instead.

Let’s take a look at the short-lived Lowe’s commercial. This home improvement retailer thought it was ever so clever by adding a “t” to the end of its brand name - making the word “lowest.” Geez! Here I thought this big box retailer was so much better than its flaming orange competitor by virtue of it's women-friendly layout, selection, and helpful salespeople. Instead, these marketers are trying to become the Wal-Mart of home improvement!

Or, let’s take a look at the latest series of ads from JC Penney. Their entire message is built around “price, value, and style”. These are not unique brand attributes, these are traits every fashionable retailer must have!

And, let’s look at the travesty created by Saks Fifth Avenue. In November of last year, beginning on Black Friday, it panicked and marked down merchandise by as much as 70%. In fact, sale signs were so ubiquitous that it taught its customers to never pay full price again. With 52 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 51 of its sister discount brand, Off 5th, it’s now impossible to tell the difference!

BUT, who is getting it right? Neiman Marcus. Although it too suffers from the same store sales declines, it appears to be recovering more quickly than its luxury competitors. My current fave promotion? Purchase at least $500 in full price women’s clothing, and get free alterations. See why I love it? It is selling value vs. discount.

HOT LESSON:

So, what’s the lesson here? Never compete on price; it is a long-term losing proposition. Instead, sell value, offer bonuses, or extensions on purchases. Example: Sign up for 12 months of coaching and get 3 additional months free!

The above information is by Liz Goodgold, branding expert, author, and speaker. Sign up for her FREE BRAND FINALE newsletter with valuable information at www.redfirebranding.com. I highly recommend her newsletter. Also, if you are on the west coast, try and make one of her seminars. Very well worth your time and a tremendous Value.

Value is a fact of doing business in this decade. A focus on value should be a high priority during times of economic downward cycles. Economic downturn is no longer the exclusive time to search for value. To be successful, businesses must understand the value they can add to their products and services. Loyal clients tend to stick with those businesses who offer value and don't go running somewhere else just for a better deal.

"In the absence of a value barometer, the relationship is reduced to a price eliminator." Bill Lee author of Gross Margin

What Value and/or added services do you offer your clients?

Here are just a few examples that I thought of:

- Publix will carry out your groceries and there's no tipping accepted
- Kroger offers free eco-fiendly wine bags. (At least my Kroger does)
- Hotels that offer free wi-fi
- Hotels that offer complimentary breakfast
- Pharmacy that offers free delivery and no tipping accepted
- Tire place that fixes flats at no charge, even if you didn't buy your tires there
- Car dealerships that offer a loaner car while yours is in the shop or a ride to local store within a 10 mile radius
- Coupon cards - Buy so many - get one free

We look forward to hearing some of your 'added values.'

Sincerely,
Annette

Don't go Naked on the internet!

Yes, you read the title right. And what does that mean you ask. I heard the term from a friend of mine and she was referring to the signature field when you send an email and not using this area to include your contact information, business name, and maybe your tagline.

There are several reasons to do this. Below are some that I thought of and I've also listed some other information about general posting to the internet. If you have others, please share.

1. Include a phone number. Don't assume the person you are communicating with has your number at their finger tips or programed in their speed dial. Many times I have had the need to call someone back and one of the places I look for their number is a recent email. I did this the other day when I was suppose to meet with someone for coffee. Yes, shame on me for not asking for and writing their number down. Anyway I checked the last several emails we had exchanged about our meeting and no phone number, so I resorted to sending an email to confirm our meeting. Luckily the person received it and it all worked out well.

2. List your company information, i.e. website, tagline, etc.. Someone might be interested in your products or services. That's how I found the greeting card business. I was surfacing the web looking for information on 'The Laws of Attraction' and read a post that had a signature line about sending a greeting card. So I did, now it's part of my business.

3. Post a photo, not a cute avatar, company logo, etc. especially on social networks. How can someone warm up to you or get to know you when they have no face to relate to. And make it a recent photo. Everyone now a days has a digital camera or camera on their phone. Take a few minutes and have someone take your photo and post it. I have a business associate who has a massive following on Twitter, but she will not follow anyone that doesn't have a photo. And what about Facebook! Have you ever searched for someone on FB? You might get several of the same names and with no photo, how are you suppose to know which one is the right person! What do you have to hide?

4. When you join a social website, put some information out there. Let people know who you are, what you do, what your interests are, etc. Again it's a
S O C I A L network. If you don't have any info out there, then you're just a lurker or stalker.

5. Participate. It doesn't take hours, but it can become addictive. Post a status, a comment, an opinion, a compliment, say happy birthday, congratulations, etc. Just like you would if you were at any other social gathering. Don't be a wall flower.

So if you want to get to know people, whether it's for personal or business reasons let them know something about you, The REAL You. Don't go naked on the internet.

Happy Networking!

Father Knows Best

Did you watch that show when you were growing up? I guess I'm telling my age by admitting I did. Robert Young always had the right answers and solutions. My Father always told me, 'Don't do as I do, Do as I tell you.' I lost my father at a very young age. He was only 53. I was a 'Daddy's Girl.' Growing up I thought my Dad could do not wrong. Honor your parents. Hold them close. Ask them all the questions you might want to know now, because you never know when they won't be around any more. Remember Dad this Father's Day. Send him a greeting card with my compliments.

Why do Women Travel in Twos?

Did Noah start something? Women travel in twos, even to the bathroom. I know the obvious answer to the title of this blog is 'safety' and yes I agree. And I guess you're asking the question, what does this have to do with networking, business, relationship marketing, etc. that I usually write about. Well something happened recently that brought this topic back to the surface. I won't bore you with the details as to why the reason for the this writing.

So I muse, why is it that some women don't feel comfortable going to some places by themselves. Is it a question of safety, lack of confidence, or just an excuse? I asked a friend of mine this question and she said because girls are taught at an early age the 'buddy system.' My friend is a Girl Scout leader. She said they teach the girls to always travel in pairs. Here again I can understand this, but I guess being raised as an only child and given my age and life circumstances, if I had always abided by this, I would have lost out on a large portion of life. I don't go to places that I feel are unsafe, however I don't wait around or depend on someone always accompanying me to events. As an adult I made the decision a long time ago that if I wanted/needed to go somewhere, that I could go alone and it would perfectly OK. I've traveled by myself, went out to restaurants alone, went to weddings, social functions, funerals, etc., however I always take the necessary precautions.

So my question is, how does a business woman function who doesn't feel comfortable going to a business meeting alone? Given that it is at a public location in a safe neighborhood. Is it a question of safety, lack of confidence, or just an excuse for not showing up?

I would love to hear your comments and feedback.

Annette

And How's That Working for You!

I recently attended a networking event. It was a 'business after hours' type of meeting. There were probably between 200 to 300 people there. Saw lots of people I knew, re-connected with some people I had not seen in a long while, and I met some new people. Did some 'netweaving,' i.e. introducing people I knew to other people I knew. After all that is the point of going to these types of events, right?.

One person I met, let's call her Sara, was certainly there to do some 'speed networking.' I was talking to a business associate when she came by and stuck out her business card, interrupting our conversation we were having. OK, we introduced ourselves and exchanged cards and she gave me a short description of what she did. Later as I was making my rounds to the various display tables, we met again and again she gave me another business card.

Overall it was a good evening, possible new business, some follow-up appointments, referrals made, and some information provided.

I have to give Sara credit. I received a phone call from her the very next day. However, Sara had not done her homework. I think the conversation started out with her asking me questions about how I market my business. After each question and my response, she would make the statement, 'How's that working for you?' After about three questions, it finally got on my last nerve, so I interrupted and asked, 'Sara, what exactly is it you're selling?' And she told me about her product and then she asked, 'Do you paint interior as well as exteriors?' RED FLAG. Obviously she was just calling phone numbers. She had not read anything on my business card, had not been to my website, let alone taken the time to ask me anything about my business. I just chuckled and said, Sara I don't paint anything.' I went on to explain what I did and the origin of the name of my business. I told her I specialized in 'relationship marketing' and provided products and services to that effect. I then tried to offer Sara some other alternatives for networking. She had not heard of BNI or The Joy of Connecting. I gave her some suggestions and told her about the list on my website that listed some networking opportunities in the area. Hopefully she'll check it out and read some of the articles on my website about networking and relationship marketing.

Here are some of my suggestions to build your network and build relationships:

1. When you go to networking meetings, make a goal to meet 5 good prospects to follow up with. Not just collect as many business cards as possible.

2. Do some 'Netweaving' - introduce people to other people who would be good referral partners. - Zig Ziglar says 'If you help enough people to get what they want, you'll get what you want.'

3. Do your homework. Look over the business card. Check out their website before you make the follow-up call. Determine how you can be of help to this person.

4. Follow up with those that you met. With a phone call, email, a card.

5. Arrange a meeting, (meet for coffee, lunch, etc.) with those that you want to further the relationship. You can start the conversation like this, 'I would like to meet with you to learn more about your business and how I can be a good referral partner for you.' Remember 'Givers Gain.'

6. Make the follow up conversation about them, not about you. Ask questions and let them talk about themselves and their business, learn about them, their wants and needs. They will then in turn ask you about you and your business.

7. Stay in touch. Add them to your Contact Manager, connect with them on Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Find appropriate reasons to follow up, i.e. when there are events that you think might be of interest, training, referrals, etc. Send them a birthday card, congratulations, (when appropriate) etc.

Believe it or not, everyone doesn't want or need what you are selling or they may need it but don't have the funds available at the moment. Or they need to get to know you before they change from their current service/product to yours. Make it about building the relationship. I heard a description recently that as we meet people and put them into our contact manager to look at it as a funnel. Some will come out the other end as great clients and customers. Does it take more work to do it this way versus Sara's 'speed networking' way? I don't think so. I would like to think that over the long haul that I have met more people, made more positive business connections, and even if they perceive they don't need my products or services, that I have built the relationship so that they will refer me to their business acquaintances who do need and can use my products and services. Isn't that what networking is all about?

I would love to hear your thoughts on how to build great relationships in business.

Happy Networking,
Annette

Mother, May I

April showers bring May flowers…..well hopefully depending on where you live. In my part of the world, Yes the flowers are blooming. I love to look out each day to see what new growth and blooms Mother Nature has brought forth.

May is just full of wonderful occasions to celebrate and show appreciation to the special people in our lives, Teachers, Nurses, and that all important day, Mother’s Day, May 10. The phone company and florists will tell you that Mother’s Day is their biggest holiday of the year.

What special memories do you have of your Mother? I lost my Mother to cancer many years ago. A few days ago I had the chance to visit with one of her brothers and see some of my cousins, aunts, and uncles. We all had a good little laugh as we were sharing one of her ‘secret recipes’ for a favorite southern dish of ours. It seems the ‘made from scratch’ recipe had been modernized over the years and Mother had shared it with a few of us who had pumped her for the information. It’s those memories that we share that make us smile or have a good laugh that hold those who are so special to us close to our hearts and keep them part of our lives. So remember those special ‘moms’ in your life this Mother’s Day whether it’s an aunt, sister, teacher, neighbor, etc. Let them know how special you think they are.

Here are the holidays and special occasions for May (including the quirky ones too):

Quirky Holidays –

May 6 No Homework Day -- Millions of kids, all of them overloaded with homework, get a much-needed night off tonight. Give 'em a break, teachers! These young folks are working harder than Mom 'n' Dad.

May 8 No Socks Day -- If we give up wearing socks for one day, it will mean a little less laundry, thereby contributing to the betterment of the environment. Besides, we will all feel a bit freer, at least for one day.

May 11 Eat What You Want Day -- Here’s one day you may actually enjoy yourself. Ignore all those on-again-off-again warnings.

May 21 I Need a Patch for That Day -- They have patches for nicotine and they have patches for heart patients. How about a patch for runny noses or bad hair?

May 28 The Slugs Return From Capistrano Day -- It’s a little known secret that slimy slugs spend their winters in lovely Capistrano, and return to our patios and gardens on this date. Bare feet are not a good idea.

Have fun celebrating!

Happy Easter - Happy Spring!

In my endless search for positive and inspirational material, I found the following which I thought was appropriate for Easter and Spring. Easter is interpreted for many as 'Re-birth.' To me Spring time is a re-birthing of all that the beautiful things in nature that the Universe has given us. And it brings thoughts of the seeds we plant in our lives and how they grow and manifest. Enjoy.

Springtime – The Seeds we Plant

Farmers are planting the seeds for their spring and summer
Crops. What are you planting for your life?

What is it that you want to create this spring, summer, year?
Now is the time to begin planting the ideas of what you
desire.

Be definitive, not necessarily in details but know exactly how
you will feel when you have arrived at your desire.

"Manifestation Rides of the Fuel of Emotion"

It is your emotion, how you feel that will help to manifest your
Goals and Dreams.

From Annette Pieper, Explore the Power of Possibilities http://www.annettepieper.com

Jewels of Life:

The past couple of weeks have been spent preparing our inner garden for planting by fertilizing and working the soil. Now is the time to seed your dreams. When we plant a seed, we set the intention that it will mature into a plant that will bear fruit or grow to maturity, re-seeding itself at the end of its life. We plant a seed expecting it to sprout, take root and grow into something magnificent. Our dreams and desires become manifest when our intentions are planted into the soil of our inner gardens. We begin by setting an intention to move towards our dreams and then take action on our intention. True intentions are stated in the present moment. They are not the “I should, I have to, I must, I will, I will try, or I would like to’s”. Intentions are the “I am” statements we make to ourselves that move us forward on our path. With “I am” messages we tell ourselves that we are committed to do the work now, to take a step. With “I will” messages we put our thoughts and actions to the “someday in the future”. Our intentions are small beginnings towards the bigger picture of our dreams, the seeds from which our dreams grow. Unfortunately, many of us are fearful of planting the seed or setting intentions. We live in barren landscapes, afraid to take the risks necessary to fulfill our greatest desires. Is there an intention that you could set that would step you towards a desire, goal or dream? Call on the vibration of Petrified Wood and plant the seed that will grow to maturity. Set that intention today…I am making that phone call, I am exercising for health, I am cooking a new and healthy recipe, I am saving money towards my dream vacation, etc.

You can’t harvest what you don’t sow. So plant your desires, gently nurture them, and they will be rewarded with abundance. –Vivian Elisabeth Glyck

April Fool

Yes I’m posting the April calendar a little early because I’m going on a little vacation. I’m going on a four day cruise to Cozumel with my company and then on to Texas for my youngest granddaughter’s first birthday celebration. And yes the picture is my granddaughter sitting among the blue bonnets. One of the reasons my daughter says that Texas is home.

Spring is in the air; at least it is where I am. The flowers are blooming, the trees and budding, the birds are singing, etc. April is National Garden month. Spring and Summer, especially summer, are my favorite times of the year. Soon we can sit outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun. We should all get outside the last week of April, it's National Turnoff Your TV Week.

Let me know what your favorite holiday or favorite time of the year is.

So what is on the agenda for April besides Easter? I do find it amusing that National Egg Salad week comes the week after Easter. Duh!

Lots of good reasons to send a greeting card to someone. Got a Sibling – National Sibling Day is April 10. Send yours a H.U.G. – Heartfelt Unexpected Greeting.

Now for my Favorite Holidays – The Quirky Holidays. I especially like April 7 and April 12. (From WellCat.com - http://www.wellcat.com/spring.htm)

Apr 7 No Housework Day -- No trash. No dishes. No making of beds or washing of laundry. And no guilt. Give it a rest!

Apr 8 Trading Cards for Grown-ups Day -- Why should we alleged adults have to give up our precious trading cards just because we get older? No more faking interest in our kids' "Purse Maniacs," or whatever they're called. What'll you give me for a holographic Elizabeth McGovern?

Apr 12 Walk on Your Wild Side Day -- Time's wasting, friends. It's high time you went out and did some things no one expects you to do. Be unpredictable for once. Go to work dressed like a gorilla; get a Master's degree, something "they" said you'd never do.

Apr 17 Blah Blah Blah Day -- A day to do all the things everyone's been nagging you about. So . . . quit smoking, get a real job. Lose weight, gain weight, and take out the trash!

Apr 18 Pet Owner's Independence Day -- Dog and cat owners take off from work and the pets go to work in their place, since most pets are jobless, sleep all day and do not even take out the trash. Owners get to stay home all day and lie around on the back of the sofa.

Apr 26 Hug an Australian Day -- To show our great appreciation for all the love and support the Aussies have given us over the years.

Enjoy the month. Find a reason to celebrate life, yours and those you love.

I’ve been extremely busy trying to get everything done to go on vacation. I have several blogs that need posting including a great one on networking from a friend of mine. So stay posted.

Until next time.

Time Marches On

Can you believe it’s March already?! We got snow in our area yesterday! It was beautiful while it was falling. I’m just glad it wasn’t cold enough to accumulate on the ground. People around here just don't know how to drive in the snow.

What’s up for March besides St. Patrick’s Day and the First Day of Spring, which are two of my favorites along with American Chocolate week which is the third week of March. Read on for the list. I even added some from the ‘Quirky Holiday List’ I recently found. Enjoy and remember it’s always fun to surprise someone and keep in touch by sending them an ‘off the wall’ holiday greeting card at an unexpected time, i.e. the second week of March is National Procrastination Week. Send a card, but be sure and send it late ;).

Here’s the Quirky list first from http://www.wellcat.com/holiday.html - I think my favorite of this list is March 22, 'As Young as You Feel Day.'

March 3 - What if Cats & Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day --We are thankful today that our pets can't really get a grip on things. Imagine a cat being able to operate the can opener or a dog that can open up the fridge!

March 9 Panic Day -- Run around all day in a panic, telling others you can't handle it anymore. Co-sponsored by the Sky is Falling Committee.

March 15 -- National Brutus Day -- No matter where you work, you must admit there's as much intrigue, plotting and back stabbing as was found in Ancient Rome or is found today inside the Washington Beltway.

March 15 -- True Confessions Day -- Confession are good for the soul. Go into work today and tell all. If you plan to stay home, make an appointment with your mirror.

March 16 -- Lips Appreciation Day -- Where would all those lovely teeth we paid a bundle for be without a lovely frame? Do something nice for your lips today. Buy a lip balm. Better yet, kiss somebody!

March 18 -- Forgive Mom and Dad Day -- Is there a parent alive who has not made mistakes? It’s time to let Mom and Dad down off the wedding cake and into the world of mere humans. Besides, you’re an alleged grown-up now, and it’s time to stop living your life as a reaction to what used to be.

March 22 -- As Young As You Feel Day -- Now more than ever you are as young as you feel. So stop acting your chronological age and get out there and start feeling peppy!

March 26 -- Make Up Your Own Holiday Day -- This is a day you may name for whatever you wish. Reach for the stars! Make up a holiday.

March 27 -- Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day -- We love those old Country Music quirky song titles, and it's time to create some new ones. How about, "Put me out at the curb, darlin', 'cause the recycling truck's a-comin' and you done throwed me out" for starters?

Now for the more Traditional Holidays from the Earth Calendar, http://www.earthcalendar.net/index.php :

Raving Fans - Best Referral Ever!

As a Marketing Solutions Consultant I work with businesses to help them build relationships with their clients and prospects for a source of endless referrals. It's always great to have satisfied customers, but when they are 'Raving Fans' like my friend Charlie, it let's me know I am offering a wonderful service. I think this is one of the best endorsements I have ever received for the greeting card service.

Here is what Charlie has to say......

All my life I have known the importance of writing thank-you notes, birthday cards, sympathy cards, congratulatory notes and other items of common courtesy successful people in business and people I admired had always been doing. I just hated doing it…the picking of the card, writing the note by hand, my handwriting and spelling are terrible. I would always angst over the process. The card would never look as good as I would have liked. Additionally, because I hated it so much and I would procrastinate so long it was an embarrassment to send the card so long after the event or gift was received that I just never did. What a disappointment - for me and, for the person who deserved better treatment and consideration from me.

Annette introduced us to send out cards and I thought, “What a novel concept”. I could pick out the card, write my comments and send out the card, all from the comfort of my own home, using my computer – with spell check – and customize the font. This would be great!

So we signed-up…and procrastinated. Now we had to learn a new computer program. What had we done? We would never use this thing. What had we been thinking?

Still, in the back of my mind, I knew we needed to expand our relationships and our business. This would be a great way to accomplish our objective.

Over the Christmas – New Year Holiday I broke into the program and gave it a try. I sent out 45 cards wishing business acquaintances, customers and family personalized Happy New Year cards. The process took me about two hours and I was wonderfully relieved. Our cards arrived 3-4 days later. People loved them. The program was easy to use. What had I been waiting for? Next I sent a customized thank you note to our 5 year old great niece for a signed print she gave us for Christmas. It took about ten minutes and it was beautiful. I sent out another special thank you note to our sister-in-law in Texas. She had painted a special watercolor portrait of our three dogs we had lost due to old age last year. This is a special gift which deserved a special thank you. I had that completed and in the mail within another ten minutes.

My brother-in-law sends out, via email, a monthly birthday, anniversary, date of passing reminder that includes everyone in the family.

I received January’s on December 30. The personalized, beautiful cards with my heartfelt sentiments were out and in the mail within about 25 min. I didn’t have to go to the post office. I didn’t lick a single envelope. And I didn’t have to go to the store and search out the perfect card - which for me was never available. One of the best parts is once the person’s name is entered, until they move, I’ll never have to remember the date or write their address ever again. The program takes care of all of that for me. This product is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

My wife and I made a business call on a new potential client Monday of this week and Monday night at 7:30 pm our thank you for your time, nice to meet you card, personalized - with their name in it - was in the mail. I did all of it from my laptop and the cost was less than if I bought the card at Wal-Mart.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you! You have just solved one of my age-old problems. The product is beautiful, simple to use, and something I’m proud to send out to anyone. If I can’t find a card that works for me in the more than 13,000 available then I can create my own. I wish I had had the use of this ever since I was about five years old. At least I have it now.

You folks are wonderful…thanks for sharing this with us Annette! You are our Hero.

Sincerely,

Charlie

The History of Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

Every February, across the country, cards, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and it's patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Ten Things to do to build Your Network which increases Your Net Worth.

This past week was International Networking week. I thought I would pass along these tips for networking.

1. Brand Yourself – By Name, Business, Tag Line, Appearance, etc. Be consistent in all your material.

2. Have a 30 Second Infomercial - Your Elevator speech – Be able to tell someone what you do that peeks their interest and makes them ask questions and want to hear more.

3. Noticeable Business Cards – If someone doesn’t comment on your business cards after handing out 5 of them – You need new business cards. (And even if you do order them from Vista, add a little something so you don’t have the Vista logo on the back.)

4. Get a website – (You can always buy your own name as a URL) And have something on it that is useful information. Useful information, tips, lists, etc. So you can refer them to your website to get the information.

5. Say what you do and Do what you Say – Deliver and give Exceptional Customer Service. Be passionate about and stand behind what you sell or get another line of work.

6. Keep in touch with people – Email, Snail mail, Drop by, Just Because, birthday, anniversary, etc. Any good real estate agent is taught to ‘touch’ their warm market at least 10 times per year – why – because Everyone knows somebody that will be buying or selling real estate. This same principal can be applied to any business.

7. Show up – Network – Follow up – Brian Tracy recommends being a member of at least 5 networking groups, 2 closed, 2 open, and 1 volunteer. Remember it takes people seeing and hearing you 7 to 8 times before they remember you and what you do.

8. Take advantage of Free stuff – Submit articles to papers, magazines, and websites. Look for places to leave your business cards, flyers, brochures, etc. Comment on internet forums. Have a blog. Join and participate in on-line social networks, i.e. FaceBook, LinkedIn, Ning sites, etc. and set up and post to Twitter.

9. Let people know how to reach you. When you call someone, unless it’s your mother, leave a phone number and repeat it twice. When you email someone, include a signature line with a phone number.

10. Be a referral source. The ‘Go To’ Person. Who do you know? Givers Gain. Be a referral partner. When you meet someone, be thinking about who you know you that you could introduce them to. Zip Ziglar says that if you help enough people get what they want, you’ll get what you want.

In BNI we are taught V+C=P – Visibility builds Credibility which leads to Profitability.

Happy Networking!

What’s Up in February -

The most noted holidays in February are Ground Hog Day, Valentine’s Day and President’s Day, but there are a few more. As I did my search on www.earthcalendar.net, there were a couple of events that I was quite surprised that were not listed on the calendar; International Networking Week, Feb. 2 – 6, and National Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 6. If you search through my blogs you will find a blog on National Wear Red Day.

I like all the fun days like Bob Marley Day. I could use some sun, fun, and relaxation, which is what I think about when I hear reggae. In fact I turned on my CD player yesterday as I was cleaning the shelf it sits on and guess what. To my surprise and delight there were raggae CD in the player already. I finished my chores to the sounds of reggae. Let’s hope that General Beauregard Lee, our resident Groundhog for Georgia, doesn’t see his shadow tomorrow. I’m ready for some sunshine and warmer days.

Another fun one is Mardi Gras. I love New Orleans. Would love to visit again. Love the town, the food, the fun. I haven’t been back to New Orleans since Katrina. I’ll have to add that to my bucket list.

Oh and another one that’s not on the list, Race Week, for those that follow NASCAR. Race Week starts Feb. 8 with the running of the 51st Daytona 500 on February 15. I’ve been to a few of those. Need to add that to my bucket list also. I would like to go back again someday, but I think I like the July race there better. February’s weather is unpredictable and is usually to cold for me. I remember in all the years we went to Daytona, there was only one year that I actually got to wear shorts and a t-shirt. I had to go buy some because I had quite packing them.

So here is February’s list. Hope you enjoy and find something to celebrate and send a H.U.G., Heartfelt Unexpected Greeting, to someone.
